Last week I had a lecture about sustainability and the professor mentioned a new form of purchasing jeans. You mainly know about leasing in terms of getting a car for example. But this subject interested me so I did some research.

Introducing Leasing Jeans by MUD Jeans

MUD Jeans are a dutch brand located in Almere. They are a company which is aiming at solving environmental and social problems through their business.

The concept behind this all is the fact that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. The waste especially increased due to the fast fashion industry.

And MUD jeans are working on changing that.

Circular Economy for the win !

THE MUD METHOD

Circular economy is basically describing the process of reusing your waste and this is the corporate philosophy of MUD jeans. For example are their jeans made partly out of post consumer denim.

Another important thing to mention is that they keep their production transparent so you can make an impression for yourself about their factories ( which by the way also produce sustainable) and how their working conditions are.

They also offer services like repairing your jeans when they are broken or they give you an discount when you send them an old pair of jeans. But the most interesting thing for me was the concept of leasing jeans.

How do you lease jeans ?

It may sound confusing at first but in theory it is actually a genius idea.

This is how it works:

  • Choose a pair of jeans ( or more , you can lease three at a time!)

  • Then you pay a fee of 29€ and then every month 7,50 € - subscription goes one year

  • If your jeans are still wearable you can keep them without any fees , but when they are destroyed or not wearable anymore you can give them back and they will recycle them

  • The point of this is that you give them back , so they can recycle them to keep their circular economy alive and working !
