Yesterday I did a self care day and I took a bus to Münster in Germany to have a day off for once. When exploring the city I came across a store called " gruene wiese" - this store mainly focuses on eco friendly and sustainable fashion. A lot of the clothing there came from a brand called " Armed Angels". The whole corporate philosophy is based around the fact of Detox Denim and not using any chemicals with the production of their garments.

When I was in the store they had like a little newspaper about this topic and I started to read it and I wanted to tell you something what was written in there , because I think its important to know about this.

Armed Angles is a German brand mainly producing garments made out of zero chemicals.

Did you know that about 8000L are used for one pair of jeans ? And that about 2kg of CO2 belongs to the ecological footprint for a jeans ?

And there are even more issues concerning the production of jeans. The brand also stresses that people working in factories are unable to work after just 30 years ? Because sandblasting of jeans is really damaging for their lungs.

How Jeans also can affect your health

Your skin is always covered in clothing hugging tight to your body, especially jeans. But did you know how damaging your beloved skinny jeans can be ?

Heavy metals , pesticides and bleach used can affect your skin and health.

Most Denim is made out of cotton , but nowadays a lot of pesticides are used to enhance the properties of cotton. And these pesticides also affect the bees. A lot of wild bees , not the conventional honey bees, die due to the use of insecticides on cotton fields.

So this brand made sure to have fair and safe working conditions and also that no chemicals are used on the field to also ensure a healthy soil for future crops. #DetoxCotton

The majority of jeans are dyed with indigo and a lot of these jeans come from countries like Asia , where there are not really regulations about what goes into the indigo dyeing process. A lot of these colors contain heavy metals like chrome. And those chemicals can transfer through our skin into our body - especially when we sweat and cause diseases like cancer, or infertility.

So ArmedAngels are using certified indigo which is safe to wear #DetoxColoring

Lastly, the washed looks on your jeans can also affect your skin causing eczema and rashes. Because a lot of factories use bleach and chlorine to create a washed look on jeans. Bleach is not affecting you if the garment washed enough so the chemicals are out of the fabric but in most cases the garments are not washed sufficiently because of cost factors.

In my previous posts I talked about denim lasering which is a more sustainable and healthy way of creating those looks on jeans. The brand also uses this technology #DetoxBleaching

Their products

Armed Angels offer a lot of simple styles in the midst price range. Pants are sold between 99- 110€ and they offer a lot of different sizes and lengths. So if you are looking for a new staple piece of jeans I would definitely give them a try ! When I was in the store I mentioned earlier I also bought a pullover from this brand and it felt really amazing on the skin and is made out of 100% cotton.

My opinion

I have to admit that I did not really care about how my jeans were produced or what it takes to produce a pair of jeans. But especially since I started my study in September i became aware of the fact what a dirty secret the fashion industry is hiding sometimes. For my first project I went the similar direction with my concept and I made sustainable jeans and I did a lot of research about this topic and I think it really opened my eyes as a consumer and as a future professional ( hopefully , fingers crossed).

I know a lot of people do not have the resources to afford clothing in that price range but I do not have the intention to sell you something here. I want to educate you. And maybe you consider buying one pair of jeans in a period of six months rather than three or four.

Thank you ! And lets save the planet together !

Love, Leonie !
